About Salzburg

More than just "The Sound of Music", Salzburg's UNESCO World Heritage listed old town is also the birthplace of Mozart, a treasure trove of museums, and the second home of the "Sacher Torte".

Annually the city plays hosts to over 4,000 cultural events, including the internationally renowned Salzburg Festival.

Salzburg has over 500 years of beer heritage, with two huge breweries based here: Augustiner and Stiegl.

Schloss Leopoldskron Park

Schloss Leopoldskron itself is surrounded on 17 acres of parkland. Decorated with sculptures, opulently decorated marble vases, and fountains. In 1931 the garden theater was inaugurated with the play of Shakespeare’s "Twelfth Night or What You Will". The first (and only) performance had to be interrupted due to a thunderstorm and heavy rain.

Large, well maintained park, a very close walk to the Schloss. A great place to spend a sunny afternoon or for a picnic. It has a playground for children, drinking water, and a peaceful lake.

Restaurant Weiherwirt0.4km

Partner restaurant to Schloss Leopoldskron, only a short wander around the lake. Beautiful views of the Schloss, large outdoor terrace, and traditional Austrian meals.

Hohensalzburg Fortress1.3km

The biggest fully preserved castle in Central Europe. The Fortress now hosts many museums, and even a Mozart dinner concert.

Stiegl Brauwelt1.5km

Stiegl is the biggest private brewery in Austria, with a brewing tradition spanning over 500 years. Daily tours of the brewery and its history. Do a beer testing after the tour at the "Braustüberl", with up to ten different Stiegl beer specialties are on offer.

Catacombs1.6km

A series of mausoleums carved into the face of the Mönchsberg rock. The cemetery that the catacombs forms a part of, is the resting place of several eminent people including composer Michael Haydn, the architect of Salzburg Cathedral, Sanction Solaria and Mozart’s sister, Mannerly. The catacombs overlook this beautiful cemetery and are accessible via a stone staircase.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in Salzburg's old town. Now a museum, Mozart's birthplace introduces visitors to the early life of the composer, his first musical instruments, and his passionate interest in opera. Daily tours.

Dom zu Salzburg1.8km

A giant monument to this city's religion, power and wealth, "Dom zu Salzburg" (Salzburg Cathedral) awes visitors with its turquoise domes and towering facade. Built, burned and re-built multiple times in the past millennia.

Botanical Gardens2.0km

Part of the University of Salzburg, the Gardens have a focus on Austrian and alpine plants, in addition to several greenhouses that are used actively for research.

Augustiner Bräustübl2.3km

Who says monks can’t enjoy themselves? Since 1621, this cheery, monastery-run brewery has served potent homebrews in beer steins, in the vaulted hall and beneath the chestnut trees of the 1000-seat beer garden. Get your tankard filled at the foyer pump and visit the snack stands for hearty, beer-swigging grub including Stelzen (ham hock), pork belly and giant pretzels.

Schloss Mirabell2.5km

A jewel of Baroque architecture, surrounded by beautifully manicured public gardens. The Marble Hall, in which father Leopold Mozart and his children Wolfgang and Nannerl gave music concerts, is considered as one of the most beautiful registry halls in the world. Several scenes from The Sound of Music were filmed here.

Red Bull Hangar-73.1km

A unique architectural work of art itself, Hangar-7 houses the historical Flying Bulls aircraft fleet and a collection of Formula 1 race cars. For many visitors, though, the highlight of Hangar-7 is the gourmet "Ikarus" Restaurant. It is unique, as a different internationally renowned chef appears each month.

Perhaps the most famous of all The Sound of Music locations, you'll immediately recognize the Gschwandtanger meadow as the location of the picnic scene when Maria teaches the kids "Do-Re-Mi." Follow the signposted "Sound of Music" trail.

One of the most instagrammable places on the planet, overlooking the postcard-perfect Hallstätter See. An easy 1-hour drive from Salzburg. Hallstatt is so beautiful, that that a complete replica of the town is being built in China.
